Low Code and RPA – are they needed together?

A low-code development platform (LCDP) is software that provides a development environment used to create application software through graphical user interfaces and configuration instead of traditional hand-coded computer programming. A low-code model enables developers of varied experience levels to create applications using a visual user interface in combination with model-driven logic.

Robotic process automation (or RPA) is a form of business process automation technology based on metaphorical software robots (bots) or on artificial intelligence(AI)/digital workers. It is sometimes referred to as software robotics (not to be confused with robot software).

In traditional workflow automation tools, a software developer produces a list of actions to automate a task and interface to the back-end system using internal application programming interfaces (APIs) or dedicated scripting language. In contrast, RPA systems develop the action list by watching the user perform that task in the application’s graphical user interface (GUI) and then perform the automation by repeating those tasks directly in the GUI. This can lower the barrier to the use of automation in products that might not otherwise feature APIs for this purpose.

They provide the ability to seamlessly build web and mobile interface to the application built. These platforms operate in an enterprise environment. They mainly integrate with enterprise systems mainly using REST APIs.

When do you need Low code platform and RPA together?

In an enterprise, there are many different systems that are involved in end to end a customer journey. There are department level apps that are built using low code platform. They are ERP and CRM systems. These ERP and CRM systems may or may not expose APIs. There are other core platforms and homegrown systems that are proprietary and built by the organization or specialized vendors. They may have no or limited APIs which are exposed. There are mainframe and miniframe iSeries AS / 400 systems in the organization.

To automated end to end process, you will need RPA when APIs are not available and low code platforms when APIs are available and application workflow is required.
